Mineola Arbor Day and Community Give-Back Event
The Mineola Civic Center in cooperation with the City of Mineola, will host a combination Arbor Day Ceremony and Community Give-Back Event from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. on April 7 at the Mineola Civic Center, located at 1150 Newsom St.
The Mineola Civic Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, along with the city of Mineola are planning to celebrate what so many enjoy here in East Texas, our trees.
Following National Arbor Day Foundation guidelines for Arbor Day 2018, the Mineola Civic Center Board of Directors hopes to bring about awareness to citizens in the area about the importance of planting trees. Trees play a critical role in East Texas and they make a world of difference. This is our opportunity to make a difference for them. Together, we can green up our community, replant forests across the county and make an impact on our planet.
The city of Mineola hopes this celebration will encourage citizens to continue to plant and improve the urban forest around them and maintain a healthy tree canopy throughout the city.
Activities surrounding the Arbor Day tree planting ceremony include a Community Give-Back Event beginning at 8 a.m. at the Civic Center Park followed by a hot dog lunch at noon and formal tree planting ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Representatives from the Mineola City Council, Civic Center Board Directors, Texas Forest Service and numerous volunteers will be in attendance to bring attention to Mineola’s urban forest.
Local civic organizations, scouting, and church groups, along with local businesses are encouraged to bring rakes, shovels, hoes, clippers and tools necessary for planting and preparing soil in this Community Give-Back Event.
Meredith Foundation founder Harry Meredith, has long supported many institutions in Mineola, including the Mineola Civic Center, Mineola Library, Mineola ISD, city of Mineola, Mineola Youth Foundation, Mineola League of the Arts, Mineola Select Theater, Mineola Soccer Association, Addie McFarland Foundation, Senior Citizens Organization, Kindness Kottage and many other entities in Mineola. Through his generosity, many have benefitted and this Community Give-Back Event is being orchestrated to allow all citizens an opportunity to Give-Back to what the Meredith Foundation has given all of Mineola and the surrounding area to enjoy.
Give-Back activities will include removing tree stumps, preparing landscape beds, power washing, playground work, cooking hotdogs and general clean-up work. Any groups interested in working on a specific area should contact the Mineola Civic Center at 903-569-6115.
Citizens are encouraged to attend and bring family and friends.
At the conclusion of the tree planting ceremony, 100 Dogwood tree seedlings will be distributed to those participating. Limit one per person.
